Purchasing gold jewellery for a Valentine's Day gift could prove to be a good option for people who wish to buy a gift that will hold its value in the future, it has been recommended.

The Economic Times has advised that jewellery made from the yellow metal "qualifies as an evergreen gift - in terms of its investment as well as its utility value".

Gold is a particularly good choice as over time the precious metal has proven to be a hedge against inflation, while yielding steady returns, the publication added.

As well as being a good option in terms of holding its value, in some areas of the world giving gold is seen as "a precious gift with a valuable meaning".

Ding, a jewellery store manager in Shanghai, China, explains that the precious metal is so popular over the Valentine's Day period that shoppers struggle to get close to counters that contain gold jewellery.
