This year will see gold play a big part in weddings, according to a new report.

A wedding trends forecast from magazine The Knot suggests that the precious metal will prove particularly popular with brides and grooms-to-be for both wedding and engagement rings in 2010.

"Taking a cue from the fashion runways, gold is the new metal for engagement rings and wedding bands," the publication says in a statement.

Currently at the forefront of jewellery trends for the winter season, gold has been highlighted in many recent fashion magazines.

Pieces such as gold statement necklaces and large cuffs and bracelets have been particularly popular among top designers and have featured heavily in numerous advertising campaigns.

Gold is already a popular metal for wedding jewellery and gifts in countries such as India and the United Arab Emirates, where families tend to pass gold bridal jewellery down the generations as gifts when females get married.
