Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet struggled to lift her 18-c gold trophy after being declared best international actress at Germany's 2009 Bambi Awards.

The star was presented with the gold trophy in recognition of her performance in The Reader, but it soon emerged that the 3.6kg gold item was too heavy for her to contend with and she had to put it down.

Ms Winslet won her first Oscar earlier in the year for her role in the same film, where she played a German woman who was harbouring a secret Nazi past.

The Bambi awards panel praised her skills as "an actress who doesn't just slip into her roles but rather puts herself into the soul of her roles".

In comparison to the Bambi awards, gold Oscars weigh 3.8kg, some 200g heavier than the German accolade.

Sculptor Owen Siegel says that he always watches the Oscars ceremony to see the surprise on people's faces when they realise how heavy the 3.8kg gold trophy is.
