Gold medals designed and created by Tiffany & Co will be presented to certain successful runners in this year's ING New York City Marathon.

The luxury jewellery firm has made 18-c gold vermeil medals to be awarded to the first place finishers in the open and wheelchair divisions of the race on November 1st.

Each medal is a quarter-inch thick and 3.5 inches high. They bear a raised motif of the marathon's starting point - the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge - surrounded by Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx, which are the five boroughs hosting the event.

The reverse of each medal features the date and logo of the New York Road Runners (NYRR), which commissioned the pieces.

Tom O'Rourke, vice-president of business sales for Tiffany & Co, said the company had been working with the NYRR for over two decades.

"During that time we have increased our participation with the creation of awards for additional categories of runners," he commented.

Over 100,000 people take part in the ING New York City Marathon every year and offers more than $600,000 (£365,187) in prize money to winning runners.

The race first began in 1970, with just 127 participants.
