A gold buying organisation established in Atlanta a year ago has raised $250,000 (£151,452) for charity through its activities to date.

According to the Messenger, Golden Girls makes contributions to local and national charities whenever it buys a genuine gold item and raised $100,000 for charities in its first nine months of operation alone.

It holds gold parties for those considering selling their gold while helping charity in this way, with five recent events in Tennessee resulting in nearly $1,000 being raised for good causes.

"I have bought some very interesting pieces - 10-c, 14-c, 18-c and even 22-c - that have come from all over the world," Amy Courtney of Golden Girls told the Messenger.

Some of the charities supported by Golden Girls include the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer's Association, Save the Bay, Habitat for Humanity, the Lifeline Family Center, the Shepherd Center Foundation and the National Aids Fund.
