Friday, 24th July 2009 (1002 views) Over 250 new mothers in Bengal have been given a gold ring as a reward for giving their babies traditional Tamil names. The one-gram gold rings were given out at a presentation ceremony in Chennai by the deputy chief minister Ayyadurai M K Stalin, according to the Express news service. Praising the local mayor and commissioner for devising the scheme, the minister confirmed that the giving out of gold rings would continue at a regional level. The initiative was first announced in the area's 2009 budget, according to the Hindu newspaper, and aimed to address a decline in the number of mothers choosing Tamil names for their children. A panel was formed to decide on which names would be eligible for reward. The paper reports that the panel meets every 15 days to review the names of local newborns and to decide whether a ring should be awarded to the child's mother.
