A search is underway in Aylesbury for the owner of a rare gold ring that is thought to have been stolen in a burglary.

The gold St George Medal ring was recovered by police after they arrested a man on suspicion of an unconnected burglary earlier this month.

A number of "distinctive" World War II medals - including a defence medal for non-operational service and a war medal that was given to all soldiers serving full-time in the war - were also part of the haul found by police officers.

It is not yet known who the ring and medals belong to and police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Gold has long been used in medals rewarding soldiers for their wartime achievements around the world.

The rarest war medal in the world is the German Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds, which includes three leaves and swords made from gold and has only ever been awarded once.

It was originally intended to be awarded 12 times depending on the outcome of World War II.
