Wednesday, 15th July 2009 (1018 views) A number of gold archaeological finds from Georgia are to go on display at a US museum this week. The J Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California, will open the exhibition, The Golden Graves of Ancient Vani, tomorrow (July 15th). Visitors will be able to view the spectacular artefacts until October 5th. They were discovered at the site of the settlement of Vani in Colchis, a region famed for its rich gold deposits. The items on display date from the mid-fifth to mid-first centuries BC and include a range of locally crafted gold jewellery, with one such example being a necklace with turtle pendants decorated with tiny gold spheres on their shells. Another gold object found at the site was a gold ring with a Greek inscription discovered in a warrior's grave. "The archaeological finds not only demonstrate the highly refined craftsmanship of local goldworkers, but also testify to contacts with both the Greek world and the Persian Empire," said Karol Wight, the Getty Museum's senior curator of antiquities, when the exhibition was first announced in late June. Opened in 2006, the museum is also home to 44,000 works of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antique art.
