An auctioneer in Scotland has seen demand for gold contribute to record sales.

Retail Jeweller reports that Bonhams in Edinburgh took a total of £315,000 at its jewellery auction this month.

Earrings and brooches were among the pieces on sale and a spokesperson for the firm told the news source that the strong showing was "undoubtedly buoyed" by the popularity of gold.

They added that success also came as a result of "the broad range of goods fresh to the market and sourced from the highlands and islands to the lowlands and cities of Scotland".

Bonhams is due to hold its next Scottish auction in August.

Later this month, gold jewellery will be among nearly 600 pieces being put up for the sale by the firm in New York.

It noted that a gold bangle created by famous designer Mario Buccellati is included and is expected to fetch between $25,000 (£15,200) and $30,000.
