Thursday, 4th June 2009 (1152 views) A gold crucifix discovered using a metal detector in the UK has been declared to be treasure.The Nottingham Evening Post reports that the item was found in north Nottinghamshire in August of last year. Having been uncovered in the Tuxford area, it is thought to date back to the 16th century. Bassetlaw Museum is now set to purchase the crucifix, after coroner Dr Nigel Chapman declared it treasure. The news source noted that the piece is around 4cm long, made of solid gold and has letters engraved across it, but no value was given. Under the Treasure Act 1996, an object that is deemed to be treasure must be offered to a museum, with the owner allowed to keep it if it is not sold. Last month it emerged that Jan Long from Herefordshire, also in the UK, had uncovered a number of items of treasure while gardening - including a gold Victorian watch.
