Ancient gold jewellery discovered by archaeologists in a mound near the town of Simeonovgrad in Bulgaria is on display in a museum, it has been reported.

The items have been purchased and donated to the Museum of Thracian Art by lawyer Todor Batkov and the Municipality of Haskovo, according to the Standart News.

Bulgaria's president Georgi Parvanov and Prince Akishino of Japan recently viewed the collection at the museum in Haskovo, south-eastern Bulgaria.

The oldest item on show, a gold decoration for the robe of a king or priest from the ancient region of Thrace, dates from 4,500 to 4,000 BC.

Professor Nikolay Ovcharov has claimed that the hoard is the "oldest golden treasure unearthed in Europe" and has spent many years tracking down the scattered pieces in order to put together the complete collection, which is now at the centre of a new exhibition entitled The Thracian Culture in the Eastern Rhodopes.

In related news, a number of gold necklaces, including a gold and coral piece from 19th century France, are on show in a special exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts called The Unspoken Messages: The Art of the Necklace.
