An independent firm from Birmingham is creating the gold medals that will be presented to winners at this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Based in the city's Jewellery Quarter, Toye, Kenning & Spencer was founded in 1685 and has been making prizes for the exhibition since 1977, the Birmingham Post reports.

According to the family-owned company, each medal is handmade by a team of five or six skilled workers who take several hours to craft the item.

"The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is one of the highlights of this time of year and we are very proud to play a part," the firm's director Fiona Toye told the news source, adding that Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter is a world leader in "this area of craftsmanship".

Toye, Kenning & Spencer specialises in the design and manufacture of specially commissioned jewellery pieces in gold, as well as state and civic insignia such as chains of office.
