The head of a communications fund has claimed that a gold ring she crafted herself is a reminder of the importance of never giving up.

Speaking to a Women of Influence event in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Karen Sheriff explained that she had saved up for two summers to purchase the gold and had made the jewellery item during a metalworking course at university, the Canadian Chronicle Herald reports.

The president and chief executive of Bell Aliant Regional Communications Income Fund, who still wears the ring today, said that it represents the importance of practicing persistence and of "seizing the opportunity in front of you".

Ms Sheriff added that she had become distracted and slipped when soldering the ring, but had been taught by her lecturer to repair it, proving that "anything is possible".

Meanwhile, in the UK, a man recently used a gold ring to propose to his girlfriend of four years dressed as a "knight in shining armour".
