The Worshipful company of Goldsmiths is funding a new study into how trade in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter can remain competitive in the current economic climate.

Conducted by consultants Private 2 Public, the jewellery research has also received financial support from Birmingham City Council and the British Jewellers' Association, the Birmingham Mail reported.

Designed to ensure that the famous Jewellery Quarter in Hockley maintains its "sparkle" during the recession, the study will also look at how it should plan for the future.

Andy Munro, Jewellery Quarter Regeneration Partnership operations director, told the news source: "More than 70 per cent of visitors to the Quarter come to shop for jewellery and the vast majority of those would like to buy products made in the quarter."

A strategy and action plan will be developed for the historic area from the results of the study.

Dating back more than 250 years, the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter is home to around 400 businesses - including many gold specialists - and has over 200 listed buildings.
