The lost Treasure of Lima has been located by an enthusiast in the subject.

Michael Munroe, a market trader, has identified a spot on Cocos Island off the Costa Rica coast that he believes is the location of a hoard of gold items that were buried by captain William Thomson in 1820, the Leicester Mercury reports.

The 53-year-old treasure hunter from Melton stated that he made a breakthrough by analysing soil types on the island after spending 14 years investigating the area.

Among the missing treasures are thought to be a number of solid gold crowns and a life-sized gold statue of the Virgin Mary.

"It is a huge list of items we are talking about - something like 100 tonnes of treasure," he told the paper.

The total haul could be worth over £100 million and failed expeditions to recover the trove have previously been carried out by actor Errol Flynn and racing car driver Sir Malcolm Campbell.

Those people keen to see a solid gold statue may wish to visit the Santa Clara Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo in California next month, where a model of Mickey Mouse made from the precious metal will be on show.
