Friday, 13th February 2009 (1977 views) Gold jewellery unearthed from ancient tombs has been placed on display at the Field Museum in Chicago.A total of 150 pieces are on show in the Masterpieces of Ancient Jewellery: Exquisite Objects from the Cradle of Civilisation exhibition, including ancient gold rings, necklaces, pendants and brooches, the Chicago Tribune reports. Each item of adornment in the temporary display was found by archaeologists over the past century buried with human remains. Many of the objects on show are priceless, coming from cultures in Persia, Egypt, the Levant, Mesopotamia and the Middle East, including Uruk and Ur, the first cities in the world, the news source noted. Alison Neumann, a gemologist at the Field Museum, told the newspaper: "What is interesting is that the techniques these ancient craftsmen developed to shape precious metals into beautiful jewellery pieces have scarcely been improved upon since then." Organised by the National Jewelry Institute, the exhibition will run until July 5th and covers several millennia, with pieces ranging from 1,000 to 7,000 years old. Also at the Field Museum, an exhibition called The Aztec World is showcasing gold artefacts from one of the worlds greatest civilisations until April.
