Tuesday, 10th February 2009 (1846 views) A 400-year-old gold ring forms part of a collection in Oxfordshire celebrating love tokens.Oxfordshire county council's Museums Resource Centre has curated a new list of items based around the ways in which love has been expressed over the centuries in the county to mark Valentine's Day 2009. Discovered at Finstock near Chipping Norton, the gold ring is decorated with hearts and flowers and bears the inscription "Kindly take this for my sake". The gold ring is currently store at the centre in Standlake near Witney and forms part of a list of stock compiled by the centre to demonstrate the county's romantic past as similar rings have been exchanged for centuries as love tokens for weddings and betrothals. Reported to the coroner when it was found and declared as treasure trove, the ring was purchased by the Oxfordshire Museum Service via the Portable Antiquities Scheme. In related news, a local museum in Monmouthshire is interested in purchasing a 400-year-old gold posy ring discovered in Mathern by a man with a metal detector, according to the Free Press.
