Monday, 9th February 2009 (1620 views) A gold ring discovered by a metal detector enthusiast in Mathern, Monmouthshire has attracted the interest of a local museum.According to the Free Press, the delicate posy ring was discovered by Tony Blackley on January 17th and has been examined by Dr Mark Redknap, curator of medieval and later archaeology at Amgueddfa Cymru (National Museum Wales). Declared treasure at Gwent Coroners Court, the rare gold ring is estimated to be 400 years old and features a Latin inscription which states "gift of a most beloved friend". Dating from 1560 to 1610, Chepstow Museum has expressed an interest in purchasing the ring for its collection, though it has yet to be valued. A gold ring presented to Charles Dickens by poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson will be auctioned this month with a guide price of £25,000 to £35,000. Featuring the inscription "Alfred Tennyson to Charles Dickens 1854", the ring is believed to have been in the possession of a secret love child the author is thought to have fathered with his sister-in-law and housekeeper Georgina Hogarth.
