Thursday, 15th January 2009 (1821 views) Gedalio Grinberg, who helped to popularise the gold watch in the US, has died at the age of 77 in Manhattan.Mr Grinberg is credited with turning gold watches into a status symbol, selling and advertising top brands such as Piaget. The Cuban entrepreneur built up an empire after moving to New York through clever marketing of expensive imported wristwatches from Switzerland. Founder and chairman of the Movado Group, Mr Grinberg was hailed in Forbes magazine in 1988 for making "the glint of gold on a male wrist a status symbol". Efraim Grinberg, Movado president and chief executive, stated: "My father's passion for the watch industry and for our business will live on." A list of official gifts received by Prince Charles and Camilla in 2008 revealed that he was presented with a gold watch during a visit to Brunei, while his wife received a jewellery set.
