Monday, 15th December 2008 (1841 views) Gold from the tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun has gone on show in Atlanta, Georgia.Discovered in 1922 by English archaeologist Howard Carter, the tomb of Tutankhamun (1341 BC-1323 BC) was full of treasure. Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs runs at the Atlanta Civic Centre until May 25th 2009, having originally debuted in London and also includes objects from the reigns of a number of other pharaohs. Highlights of the exhibition include gold objects including Tutankhamun's gold toe and finger protectors, golden sandals, four miniature gold coffins for the king's internal organs, the golden funerary mask of Psusennes I, a gold plaque featuring a leopard head, a gold chalice bearing the name of Queen Tawosret and an array of jewellery items. Gold was thought to be the skin and bones of the gods by ancient Egyptians and gold left in pharaoh's tombs reaffirmed the divinity of rulers.
