Wednesday, 10th December 2008 (1956 views) The creation of a vibrant community of artists in Seattle and the achievements of gold jewellery designers in the US city has been highlighted.Ranging from conceptual art jewellers to fashion jewellery designers, the Seattle Times claims that the city in Washington state has a "vibrant jewellery scene". Rebbecca Tomas, jewellery and metals manager at Pratt Fine Arts Centre, told the newspaper: "There's something about Seattle that just draws people out. It's a really giving, generous community." Around 200 people are now members of the Seattle Metals Guild, more people in the city are taking part in jewellery classes, galleries are exhibiting art jewellery and boutiques are featuring local designs. For example, professional jeweller Mary Lee Hu, who trained and now teaches at the University of Washington, crafts delicate 18-c and 22-c gold pieces that use traditional textile techniques such as weaving, twining, wrapping and braiding. "By using the deep yellow colour of the high carat gold, symmetry and intimate detail, I hope to reference the Classical Greek, Etruscan or Celtic," she explains to the Flintridge Foundation.
