A number of gold items are on display at the Guildhall Art Gallery as part of a new exhibition that traces life at the amphitheatre in Roman London.

The show about one of the most significant buildings in Roman London includes delicate gold jewellery and coins dropped by spectators attending events at the amphitheatre.

Curated by Museum of London Archaeology, with support from the City of London, the study of London's Roman amphitheatre provides a chance for the public to look at previously unseen artefacts, such as decorative brooches and buckles.

Discovered under Guildhall during excavations between 1985 and 1999, the Roman amphitheatre was originally a timber construction dating from around AD74, which was rebuilt with masonry foundations and walls and new timber stands circa AD120.

Gold fragments from the hilt of an Anglo-Saxon sword dating from the seventh century and found in a field in Market Rasen are currently on display at a museum in Lincolnshire.
