A gold engagement ring that belonged to Hollywood actress Deborah Kerr is to go under the hammer in London.

Auctioneer Bonhams has announced that it will sell a collection of jewellery owned by film icon Kerr, who starred in more than 50 films, including From Here to Eternity (1953) with Burt Lancaster, The King and I (1956) with Yul Brynner and An Affair to Remember (1957) with Cary Grant.

The rose gold ring is expected to fetch up to £25,000 and dates from around 1945, the year that Scottish-born Kerr married RAF squadron leader Anthony Charles Bartley.

Other highlights of the sale include a mid-19th century gold and turquoise long snake-like chain, which used to be worn by the actress around her wrist, estimated at £2,000-£2,500.

Kerr died in November 2007 and the collection is being sold on behalf of Kerr's family, having been held in a bank vault for years.

A number of items owned by silent movie star Mary Pickford went on sale in Beverley Hills last month, including a gold bracelet comprising eight heart-shaped engraved charms.
