A gold ring left to Wallis Simpson by the Duke of Windsor as a symbol of his love for her is to go under the hammer in Essex.

Expected to fetch up to £5,000, the small gold piece is engraved to 'Darling Wallis' and formed part of a set of two triple-hoop gold rings worn by the Duke, the Daily Mail reports.

Last sold for £18,000 at the Hotel Beau Rivage on Lake Geneva in 1987, the ring was purchased as a competition prize by the newspaper.

It was won by Rose Russell, now 80, whose daughter Hilary Mosley claimed it was her mother's "pride and joy" and was only worn on very special family occasions.

Ms Russell presented the ring to her daughter in 2000 and it will now form part of a royal sale at Colchester auctioneers Reeman Dansie.

According to the Western Morning News, former maid of Wallis Simpson Pauline Armitage is selling items given to her by the duchess, including a gold Cartier brooch, in the same sale.
