A jewellery fair in Beijing has attracted crowds of Chinese merchants, designers, wholesalers and customers.

Reuters reports that there were some stunning gold pieces on display at the China International Jewellery Fair, including luxurious handmade tiaras.

China is one of the largest gold consumers in the world and jewellers at the fair predicted that the country would continue to see high demand for gold despite the recent economic slowdown.

Zhang Guoan, chief executive of gold wholesaler Guilu Jewellery, stated: "Gold is a kind of currency so it is safe for people to invest their extra money in buying gold."

A millionaire goods fair in Shanghai last month attracted enthusiastic crowds, with a wealth of high-end gold goods on display for visitors.

Held at the at Shenzhen Exhibition Centre, the 2009 China International Jewellery Fair will take place between February 26th and March 1st next year, with companies and organisations from around the world expected to showcase their goods.
