A gold pendant worth around $23,000 (£15,000) is one item up for sale at a public auction in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The necklace depicting Jesus will sit alongside a number of other unique jewellery items when it is auctioned on Thursday, the Press Association reports.

Watches, rings and bracelets are all for sale, with one article expected to fetch up to $38,000.

It is the first time such pieces, which have been obtained by North Carolina local authorities, have been put up for a public auction in nine years.

Recently, a rare gold chain of office was sold at auction for £313,250.

Dating from the reign of Henry VIII, the necklace is called a Coleridge Collar and represents the person's allegiance to the crown.

It is likely that the item was presented to the King's close advisor Sir Edward Montagu in the 1540s by Henry himself.
