Chinese consumers prefer high-quality gold jewellery, it has been claimed.

Speaking to Emirates Business, director and general manager of Chow Tai Fook Jewellery China Kent Wong stated that they see the precious metal as an asset.

"Consumers in mainland China prefer to invest in 24-c gold jewellery as an investment and as an ornament for daily use," he told the news source.

Mr Wong added that some Chinese consumers can pay up to $1,000 (£643) per piece of jewellery, although most young couples purchase items that cost between $50 and $200.

Chief executive officer of Hong Kong-based jeweller Luk Fook Group William Wong added that demand for jewellery in the country peaks during the October and November marriage season.

Recently, a number of gold jewellers attended an event - organised by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre - which praised the presence and strong growth of gold jewellery around the world.
