Wednesday, 5th November 2008 (2354 views) Dubai Mall has been officially opened, offering a range of attractions to shoppers in the Middle East, including a gold souk.Hailed as the largest-ever mall opening, the 12 million sq ft complex houses 220 gold and jewellery outlets. Dubai Mall is located in the United Arab Emirates and features almost 600 retailers, with plans to expand this number to 1,200 stores when it becomes fully operational. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, Emaar Properties chairman, commented: "The Dubai Mall will address the world-class shopping needs of a population of over two billion people in the catchment markets of the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe." Other attractions at the mall, developed by the Emaar Malls Group, include an Olympic-sized ice rink, Bloomingdale's, an aquarium and a fashion catwalk. Gold sales in Dubai have risen over the past few months, despite the global economic downturn, with some retailers reporting shortages over the Hindu festival season.
