Gold merchants in south India are gearing up for the first Kerala Gem & Jewellery show, a business-to-business exhibition being held next month.

Organised by magazine The Art of Jewellery, it will be launched on November 14th and run for two days, according to fibe2fashion.com.

More than 150 exhibitors from all areas of India, including Mumbai, Surat and Jaipur, will be displaying their wares at the event.

The state of Kerala is famous for its fondness for gold and consumes around 20 per cent of the country's gold jewellery, the news provider noted.

It has over 5,000 gold retailers and the Trissur area alone has approximately 3,000 large-to-medium sized jewellery manufacturers.

Kerala's minister for industries and commerce, Elamaram Karim, said: "The government will extend its full support to the show."

The Hindu newspaper recently highlighted India's fascination with gold, citing World Gold Council figures that showed demand for the precious metal amounted to 118 tonnes in the second quarter of this year.
