Treasure hunter finds £25k gold cross in fieldThe news feeds on this site are independently provided by Adfero Limited © and do not represent the views or opinions of the World Gold Council. Thursday, 7th August 2008 (2318 views) A pure gold cross dating back to the seventh century has been uncovered. The Anglo-Saxon crucifix was discovered by a treasure hunter and his metal detector in a field in Nottinghamshire. It is believed the one-inch wide, eight-carat gold historical object was made in the UK from melted down French coins. The lucky explorer has asked to remain anonymous and the exact location of the cross has been kept secret. On finding the cross, the unnamed man said: "My fingers closed on it and when I opened them I was gazing down, literally with my jaw dropped in astonishment, at the most wonderful find I've ever recovered." The artefact is thought to be worth £25,000. As it has been deemed a "treasure trove", the finder will be entitled to half of its value. Earlier this year, treasure hunters claimed they had found two tonnes of hidden Nazi gold in a man-made cavern in Germany, reported the Times.
