Fashion jewellery retailers have created a more affordable version of iconic hip-hop jewellery.

The oversized gold rope chains, otherwise known as dookie chains, were made famous in the 1980s and early 1990s by artists such as LL Cool J and Run DMC.

Usually the chains were made from 14-karat gold and were hollow in design so as to not be too heavy to wear.

Dookie chains are now being worn by hip hop stars such as Snoop Dogg, Nas and Kanye West.

As solid gold chains can reach up to $3000 (£1,496), a more affordable version has been created by retailers such as hiphopbling.com.

These chains are still large and hollow and are painted in 24-karat gold.

Kanye West told MTV: "It's dope for black people to wear a lot of jewellery - it was always in an African's blood to rock gold.

"It's not ostentatious; it's an African thing."
