The National Jeweler Network has reported on the continuing popularity of gold in watch design following recent fashion shows in Switzerland.

The jewellery website said: "Watch retailers say larger-size cases continue to be a top trend and that rose gold remains in vogue while white gold keeps making inroads."

Events in Geneva and Basel showcased a host of watch designers including Rolex, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Zenith and Vacheron Constantin.

Steven Goldfarb, president of Alvin Goldfarb Jewelers in Bellevue, Washington said one of his highlights was the Rolex Submariner. This watch has been updated into solid gold version.

Customers can choose between white gold or yellow gold.

The world's most expensive watch, reported in June 2008, is the Joaillerie 101 Manchette from Jaeger-LeCoultre which comes in 18-carat white gold, according to rediff News.

Without placing an order for the watch the price is unattainable, but the second most expensive watch in the world is the Tour de I'lle by Vacheron Constantin which is priced at $1.5 million (£747,477).
