Jewellery designer says pieces 'display wearer's emotions'Monday, 7th July 2008 (695 views) The designer of a pair of gold earrings has described jewellery as a "symbol of people's emotions".According to Sunshine Coast Daily, Mark Cotterell believes pieces are often a marker of time and should reflect the wearer. He discussed this element of the design process in addition to talking about a pair of earrings he created that were recently nominated for an award. Combining 53.2 grams of gold and 11-carat diamonds, the 11-centimetre earrings cost A$34,950 (£16,991) and were entered in last year's Harper's Bazaar Diamond Guild Australia Jewellery Awards an annual ceremony which began in 2005. A model wore them on the night of the event and said although they weighed "a bit", it was worth it. To maximise versatility, the design involves a stud with a detachable longer section so they can be worn either way, Mr Cotterell said. And the choice to use yellow gold was all his, the creator added. "Yellow gold's much nicer to work with," he said. "Working with yellow gold is like working with butter. "White gold is a harder metal because of the nickel content it's like filing steel."
