Monday, 7th July 2008 (2151 views) A man from Port Kennedy has been charged with stealing gold from a northern Goldfields mine, reports the Golden Mail. The theft concerns $20,000 (£9,716) worth of gold bullion which the Gold Stealing Detection Unit will say was stolen from the Darlot gold mine on two separate occasions. Darlot gold mine is located in the Yandal Greenstone Belt. In 2006 it produced 137,000 ounces of gold, according to Mining Australia. Estimated mineral reserves at the mine were 0.8 million ounces of gold as of December 2006. Aragon Resources also has a project in the Yandal Greenstone Belt which covers over 1352 sq km. Located in Kalgoorlie, the Gold Stealing Detection Unit celebrated its one hundred-year anniversary for protecting the gold industry in western Australia last October. Chief Executive, Tim Shanahan, said: "The Gold Stealing Detection Unit gives gold producers confidence that their industry will not be undermined by theft of the precious metal."
