Thursday, 15th May 2008 (2468 views) There might be something about Northampton, UK, that makes the people want to invest in jewellery.According to a Halifax Insurance study, the town's residents wear the most jewellery of those in any other town in the British Isles, closely followed by Glasgow in Scotland and Wrexham in Wales. Halifax's research revealed that every person in the city wears £469 of gold and other precious metals, with and without semi-precious or precious stones. As a nation, Brits own £52 billion in gold and other precious metals and £8.6 million of this is worn daily. The Guardian newspaper interviewed Lee Masons, the mayor, who wears a heavy gold chain at official civic functions and with the accompaniment of its 'bodyguard', the mayor's officer. She said: "I do think people are very style-conscious here, though I'm not really much of a fashion expert. "In Northampton we do still like to make an effort when we go out. And that includes jewellery."
