Festival of Gold "a hit" with shoppers in India

Monday, 14th April 2008 (690 views)

The 19th annual Festival of Gold organised by India's state-owned trading company MMTC, has been "a hit" with consumers visiting the four-day event in the city of Chandigarh, according to reports.

India's Economic Times said the exhibition gave shoppers a chance to buy items such as gold jewellery and medallions from experienced craftsmen based across the country.

Among the gold items on display were "intricately designed" chains, bracelets, rings and tops, as well as both traditional and modern bangles, MMTC chief general manager Preeti Kaur told the newspaper.

"On display is a stunning array of jewellery both in plain gold and studded, from various parts of the country," he added.

This year's event marks the first time that the MMTC's Festival of Gold has been held in Chandigarh, a city that serves as the capital of two northern Indian states - Punjab and Haryana.

According to the newspaper, the decision to move the event north was made in response to a rising demand for non-traditional jewellery and MMTC's desire to establish itself in that part of India.
