Gold jewellery recovered after robberyWednesday, 12th March 2008 (3128 views) Gold jewellery has been seized following the arrest of a group of thieves suspected of carrying out over 100 house break-ins.The crimes took place in the Indian city of Pune last year with the robbers breaking and entering homes during the day and taking a variety of stolen good including jewellery, motorcycles and cash. Five members of a Mumbai-based gang were arrested as well as Vinod Hiralal Singhvi, a jewellery shop owner who used to buy the stolen gold jewellery off the thieves, reports the Times of India. Over £4,476 of gold jewellery was recovered in total following the gang's arrest. According to the police, the suspects targeted affluent areas of the city and used pepper spray to ensure that there victims did not resist. Joint police commissioner Rajendra Sonawane explained that the forces had difficulty identifying the criminals because they wore branded clothes, had fake ID cards and drove expensive cars. Pune is the second largest city in the Indian state of Maharashtra with a population of five million.
