World's third largest jewellery show gets underway

Thursday, 6th March 2008 (3276 views)

The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, the third-biggest event of its kind in the world, set a new record for the number of exhibitors taking part when it opened on March 4th.

Some 2,306 jewellers from 45 different countries are putting their wares on show at the expo, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Charles Chan, chairman of the event's organiser Hong Kong Trade Development Council, said this year's show was taking place against a backdrop of positive news from the domestic and international jewellery industry.

Hong Kong, which is the world's fourth-largest exporter of jewellery, saw exports increase 17 per cent last year to account for 33.8 billion Hong Kong dollars (£2.16 billion).

International demand for jewellery also saw increases in emerging markets, with Russia up 177 per cent, United Arab Emirates up 39 per cent and India increasing demand by 45 per cent.

This year's show features 22 pavilions dedicated to jewellery from different regions, including Italy, Dubai and Germany, the second-largest producer of jewellery in Europe. There are also seven zones showcasing different types of jewellery, including timepieces, antiques and Jade designs.

The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show runs until March 8th.
