Gold demand from Italian jewellers 'remains strong'Tuesday, 4th March 2008 (3054 views) High market prices have not dampened Italian jewellery makers' enthusiasm for gold-heavy designs, trade fair participants in Milan have reportedly said.According to Reuters, despite gold hitting record market highs, the number of ornate gold designs incorporating diamonds and other precious stones on display at the trade show demonstrates that for high-end jewellers, no expense is spared. Paola De Luca, co-founder and creative director of jewellery consultant TJF said top-end jewellers can "always sell an important piece" because of their strong brand identity. The news service says many of Italy's high-end jewellery houses refuse to even contemplate cutting the weights of their pieces, as it would compromise their quality. It adds that a woven gold bracelet on display at the show weighed in at approximately 300 grams. According to Reuters, Italy is widely regarded as a world leader in jewellery design. Around 75 per cent of the pieces produced in the country are sold abroad.
