Treasures of China's golden age feature in new exhibition

Tuesday, 19th February 2008 (3624 views)

Gold treasures are part of a new exhibition of art, jewellery and statutes charting China's rise from the East Han period to its golden age under the Tang Empire, reports say.

According to Culture Kiosque, the exhibition, which opens at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence on March 7th, highlights the cosmopolitan nature of the Tang dynasty, which ruled China between 618 AD and 907 AD.

The dynasty ushered in China's a period of cultural renaissance throughout the empire, as it traded with Arabia and Japan through the Silk Road and its ports.

In particular, the site says, gold and silver designs reached new heights as Tang goldsmiths drew influences from the west, particularly Persia. Some of these objects will be on display at the exhibition, including treasures found in the crypt of Pagoda of Famensi and near Dingmao bridge, Zhenjiang.

The last emperor of the Tang dynasty was the 13-year-old Ai Di, who reigned from 904 AD to 907 AD.
