Treasures celebrate similarities between ancient culturesMonday, 11th February 2008 (2457 views) Gold jewellery, headdresses, figurines and other works of art are reportedly part of two temporary exhibitions celebrating the similarities between the ancient cultures of Mexico and Egypt.Cairo-based Al Ahram reports that the two exhibitions, which are taking place in Cairo and from later this month Mexico City, are firsts for both countries. They celebrate the cultural parallels of ancient Egypt and the pre-Colombian peoples of the Zapotecs and Mixtecs. Although they existed hundreds of years and thousands of miles apart, both cultures built pyramids, developed writing systems, worshipped multiple deities and introduced 365-day calendars. The Mexican exhibition, currently on show the Egyptian Museum, displays 58 items of jewellery, artwork and clothing. It is the first exhibition of foreign artefacts since the museum was established in 1835. In return, Egypt has flown several artefacts from temples along the Nile and museums in Cairo, Luxor and Alexandria to Mexico. They were initially displayed in Monterrey and will go on show in Mexico City until June. The dual exhibitions have been organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic links between the two countries.
