Machine-made jewellery 'on the rise' in IndiaWednesday, 6th February 2008 (2471 views) Modern, machine made jewellery is a "hit" with customers in parts of India according to reports, with many now favouring the pieces of more traditional, manmade designs, according to reports in the country.Chennai-based Newindpress says many jewellery store owners have decided to cash in on the trend by employing more machine-savvy goldsmiths. It adds that among fashion conscious suburbanites, the design of handmade jewellery has become passe. Now, it says that instead of placing the orders for a design a month or two in advance, as many had to do with traditional goldsmiths, shoppers can visit a jewellery store and pick from a wide variety of machine-made pieces. Machine-made gold jewellery is also easier on the wallets, as handmade pieces tend to be more expensive because traditional goldsmiths are now so rare. The site says that 20 years ago, the Kendrapara district had 6,000 goldsmiths producing gold and silver ornaments. Kendrapara is located around 122 kilometres from Bhubaneswar, the state capital of Orissa in north east India.
