Gold jewellery has been identified as the must-have accessory for 2008 by First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida.

Taking the lead from fashion-forward celebrities such as singer and actress Jennifer Lopez and new mum Christina Aguilera, gold is expected to be a popular item on and off the red carpet this year.

In particular, gold necklaces and bracelets have been identified by the news source as "a big hit" in the accessories world.

Earlier this week during a jewellery trade fair in Vincenza, Italy, Reuters reported that high-end jewellers are looking to create ornate, Renaissance-inspired pieces with lightweight gold.

During Tuesday's events at the Vincenza festival, gold has been identified as a key jewellery trend through to 2009, with filigreed gold work, birds and religious iconography expected to be favoured by designers.

According to the International Diamond Exchange, upcoming jewellery items in 2008 and 2009 may be inspired by ballet and opera in Russia and China.
