Gold ornaments on sale in IndiaThursday, 3rd January 2008 (3290 views) A collection of handicraft items is currently on sale in the Indian community of Akwarpet, it has emerged.The Hindu newspaper reported that one-gram gold ornaments are among the collection of items on display and for sale in the Corporation Community Hall. Organised by the Artisans Welfare Trust, the exhibition and retail event is thought to contain more than 90 types of handicraft items, including a variety of gold and gemstone jewellery, antique, artefacts, wood carvings and statues. It is scheduled to run until January 17th and is hoped to "bridge the gap" between consumers and artisans, the newspaper said. Gold is currently a popular commodity, with Canada's Financial Post reporting that many people in the country are selling their outdated and unwanted gold jewellery in order to purchase newer, more modern items. The country is thought to import around 700 tonnes of gold per year, including jewellery, coins and bars, which are usually acquired for investment purposes.
