A mysterious donor, hailed by charity workers as an angel, deposited a set of gold wedding bands in a Salvation Army red kettle, a Missouri newspaper has reported.

According to the Branson Daily News, the rings were placed in a charity kettle during the community's annual Red Kettle Challenge, which took place last weekend.

Captain Ron Key, director of the local Salvation Army chapter, said the rings were dropped into the kettle inside a satin bag.

"It would have taken a lot of effort to get it into the slot on the kettle," he explained, adding that in the coming days, the jewellery items will be taken for appraisal.

The value of the ring set is currently not known.

Earlier this month, a gold and diamond ring was donated to the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Christmas campaign in Grundy County, Illinois.

According to the Herald News, the gold ring is currently being auctioned off in the Chicago suburb with bidding starting at $500 (£244).
