Gold music ring to be displayed in Morristown

Monday, 5th November 2007 (2516 views)

A music ring crafted from 18-carat gold is among the items to be displayed in a new wing at the Morris Museum, according to the Star-Ledger.

The New Jersey newspaper reported that the ring, along with over 700 other movable figures and musical devices, is set to be part of an exhibit of mechanical music items in the museum's new Guinness gallery, which opens on November 6th.

Murtogh D Guinness, of the Irish Guinness brewery family, began collecting music boxes and other mechanical music items as a child during a visit to France.

Some 150 items from his collection will be displayed to the public in the display, while the other musical items will be kept in special preservation rooms, which will be visible from some parts of the first floor of the new wing.

Among them is the gold music ring, which was crafted in Switzerland between 1802 and 1812 and plays an ancient cowherder's song entitled Le Ranz des Vaches, which was popular at the time, according to the Star-Ledger.

Located in Morristown, New Jersey, the new 4,300 square foot Guinness gallery will be the permanent home for the collection, which will be free to the public on its opening day.
