Gold jewellery to be auctioned in Birmingham

Thursday, 11th October 2007 (2920 views)

Some 20 antique pieces of jewellery, crafted and hallmarked in Birmingham, will return to their city of origin to be sold at auction next week.

The items include a nine-carat gold Edwardian heart-shaped pendant dating back to 1904, which is expected to fetch between £130 and £200, as well as a Victorian nine-carat gold double-row curb link bracelet, hallmarked Birmingham 1900 and expected to sell for between £80 and £120.

The auction is taking place at Fellows & Sons, located in the city's jewellery quarter.

"Birmingham has a rich history of both antique and modern jewellery," said Stephen Whittaker, managing partner at Fellows & Sons.

He added that the team of jewellery experts at the auction house was very excited to come across the Birmingham hallmark on the antique jewellery pieces.

"That means it was probably made within a few miles of where they work and gives them a real sense of the history and location of the pieces," he explained.

Birmingham's historic jewellery quarter has been the base for highly-skilled jewellery makers and goldsmiths in the UK for more than 200 years, according to the-quarter.com.
