London hotel offers 'gold-standard' accommodationFriday, 5th October 2007 (2684 views) A historic 1930s-era hotel in London is offering a formerly private four-bedroom penthouse apartment with gold-plated fixtures and carpeting for guests who want to pass an evening in luxury, according to Time magazine.The Dorchester Hotel, which overlooks Hyde Park, has billed itself as a "pinnacle of luxury and ease" for more than 50 years. Established in 1931 and filled with Hollywood history Elizabeth Taylor was staying in the hotel's Harlequin Suite when she learned that she had won the starring role in Cleopatra the luxury apartment located on the building's top floor boasts carpets threaded with 22-carat gold and 24-carat gold-plated fixtures in the bathroom. The suite was completed in 1956 and was originally exclusively reserved for hotel founder Sir Malcolm McAlpine, according to Time magazine, but is now available to the general public. According to Time, a night in the five-star penthouse apartment at the Dorchester costs $35,000 (£17,190) per night.
