Gold hallmarking to be made mandatory in IndiaThursday, 4th October 2007 (2730 views) A new initiative to ensure the quality of gold jewellery produced in India will be made mandatory in the country from January 2008, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has said. The Hallmark program, which will incorporate a BIS mark branded on each piece of Indian-produced jewellery that specifies the fineness of gold used in the item, will initially apply to the four major cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata, according to Indlaw News. Eventually, the scheme will be expanded to include jewellers in smaller towns and rural areas. According to Commodity Online, Shantibhai Patel, president of the Gems and Jewellery Trade Council of India, said that eventually he would like individual customers to have their jewellery tested for hallmark standards, as presently, only jewellers can apply for a licence to sell hallmarked items. The BIS has said that the hallmarking scheme will help to guarantee the purity of gold jewellery produced in India and to protect the public against fraud.
