Gold jewellery becoming a popular 'push present'

Thursday, 4th October 2007 (2922 views)

As "push presents" – gifts presented to a new mother by her husband or significant other following the birth of their child – increase in popularity, gold jewellery is emerging as the gift of choice, according to MSNBC News.

Jewellery designer Christina Addison permanently fuses images of new babies onto gold pendants as a gift for new mothers, while 18-carat gold bracelets studded with the birthstone of the latest addition to the family are also becoming popular.

Celebration rings designed by Tiffany, priced from £1,750, are designed to commemorate significant moments, such as the birth of a baby, and can be customised with pink jewels for a girl or blue for a boy.

According to Fox News, push presents have longstanding cultural significance in India, where a husband is expected to present his wife with gold jewellery and in England, where the traditional gift for a new mum is an "elegant ring", but the trend is just beginning to emerge in the United States.
